Back Story on this Mondrian Inspired Raincoat

The first step was to make a muslin manque with markings for the color spots on this coat as Piet Mondrian was very specific about his color blocks. In fact, he calculated the placement of his color/noncolor elements to achieve what he called a "balance of unequal but equivalent oppositions".

A template was made for the layout of the colors. Fabric, cutout like puzzle pieces to simulate color placement, was made next. This was a conservation measure as the pieces were used again in the first sample.

Next some stitching of the elements to approximate the coat with changes in squaring up the garment.

Adding the snaps on the black borders at the end was a nail-biting moment.
